Welcome

Thorncombe

The Parish of Thorncombe lies in the north-west corner of Dorset, bordering both Devon and Somerset. It is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Parish is over 5200 acres in extent and is principally agricultural land. It forms part of the district of West Dorset. There is a population of approximately 700, half of which live in the village of Thorncombe, and the rest in the hamlets of Holditch, Hewood, Synderford and outlying farms and houses.

The Parish has a wealth of amenities and attractions, and this site contains information, photos and maps to tell you about them and the people of Thorncombe.

Our Village

Thorncombe is set in a beautiful, rural and hilly area. It is inland from the Lyme Regis coast and the Marshwood Vale. It has all the features of a picturesque village with award winning Community Shop, Village Hall, School, Social Club and Church. There are a wide variety of cottages, houses and accommodation of all ages and varieties. It is two kilometres south of Forde Abbey.

Our Environment

Thorncombe is fortunate to be set in a very beautiful part of West Dorset, very close to the Devon and Somerset border along the Axe Valley. It is a rural setting surrounded by small fields, mostly set to livestock farming. Access for the last few kilometres is via narrow winding lanes with attractive hedgerows and a wide variety of wooded areas. It is at a crossroads for many major and minor footpaths and a walker’s haven.

Our Coast

Whilst Thorncombe is well set in its own environment it is approximately 6 miles to Crewkerne, Chard and Axminster; whilst only being 10 miles from Bridport and 9 miles from Lyme Regis. This places it inland from the famous Jurassic Coast and all its attractions, from walking to collecting fossils or relaxing on holiday.

The village is fortunate to have a purpose built hall in a central position. It is well used, in good condition and has very good indoor resources, external parking and access. It is a crucial resource for the village and area and very open to regular and new users.
